Unlock the transformative power of EMDR therapy, a proven and interactive approach that may help clients process trauma, alleviate distress, and foster emotional healing. By shifting the focus away from discussing traumatic events, EMDR emphasises transforming emotions and symptoms associated with those experiences.
EMDR, developed by Francine Shapiro in 1987, is a psychotherapy used to treat PTSD and other psychological conditions. It involves discussing traumatic memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements. While the American Psychological Association acknowledges its effectiveness for treating adult PTSD, systematic analyses suggest its efficacy is comparable to trauma-focused cognitive and behavioural therapies.

Our comprehensive programme offers a thorough introduction to EMDR, guiding you through its theory, principles, and practical application. You’ll explore the history of EMDR, its core principles and supporting theories, learn treatment protocols, and gain insights into client management strategies. The course combines multimodal, structured learning with assessments to ensure a deep understanding of the subject matter.
Progress through the online study materials at your own pace, and once you’ve completed the theoretical elements, you’ll be ready for a 1-day live course held in Leeds. With a maximum of six students per session, you’ll benefit from a focused and personalised learning experience.
However, EMDR’s effectiveness for treating PTSD is debated, with varying recommendations from professional guidelines. Critics argue that EMDR’s distinctive features, such as bilateral stimulation, do not contribute to therapeutic effectiveness, and that the underlying theory is unfalsifiable and non-scientific. Despite this, EMDR remains a popular therapy, with some practitioners using it for trauma therapy and complex post-traumatic stress disorder.
